Dog Sled Mushing in Alaska

Dog sleds have always been a part of the Alaskan heritage providing one of the only forms of transportation over the arctic tundra. Dog sledding gained great fame from the heroic relay of 1925 when lifesaving serum was raced from Nenana to Nome during a diphtheria outbreak. Today, the relay has been transformed into "The Last Great Race", the Iditarod, a 1049 mile race from Anchorage to Nome.
